Plastic Surgery FAQs from a Board-Certified Surgeon (Part 1): Healing & Recovery

When you’re pondering or planning cosmetic surgery, it’s natural to have questions. Surgery is a big decision, and here at The Lucas Center, we take your care, your comfort, and your confidence very seriously. That’s why we want to help address all your concerns — so when you trust us with a procedure, you know what to expect and that you’re in good hands.

To that end, for Part 1 of this two-part series, we’ve gotten the scoop from our very own Dr. Lucas, a highly-experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon in the Knoxville area.

Let’s look at the answers to several of the most frequently asked questions about recovery from plastic surgery…

Q: Does skin lose feeling or sensitivity after surgery?

Many patients worry about losing feeling or sensitivity in their skin after plastic surgery, particularly when considering any type of breast or facial surgery. During the early days of recovery especially, normal swelling and bruising can cause numbness or loss of sensitivity.

Any area of the body that experiences significant changes to the skin (i.e. face, abdomen, arms, thighs, etc.) can expect to experience changes in sensation for approximately six months. In some cases, it may take up to a year for full sensation to return to the area.

Q: What can I eat/drink after surgery?

Depending on the surgery performed and the type of anesthesia used, Dr. Lucas’s team may give you specific instructions for what you can eat and drink in the hours immediately following surgery.

In the days and weeks following, Dr. Lucas recommends a balanced, nutrition-dense meal plan. Excellent nutrition can help your body heal more completely and more quickly. Pay attention to important macronutrients like healthy fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Taking a good probiotic and getting vitamins A, C, D, E, and K are also helpful for your recovery — plus, don’t forget plenty of water and fiber!

Q: What is the role of compression garments in recovery?

After certain procedures, such as a tummy tuck, face lift, or liposuction, compression garments can help reduce swelling and support your body during recovery. They can also help prevent fluid build-up between layers of skin and encourage proper healing.

How long you wear a compression garment will depend on your procedure, your surgeon’s recommendation, and your own comfort as you continue to recover.

Q: When is a good time of year for plastic surgery?

Our team is ready to help you whenever is best for your schedule and your body. However, the fall and winter months can be a great time for surgery because the cooler weather allows for an easier, sweat-free recovery. Many people also have time off around the holidays, which can be great for getting plenty of rest before returning to daily life more confident than ever.
