If you’ve ever heard the phrase, “the eyes are the windows to the soul,” then you know that they’re also one of the most distinguishable features on your face. Your eyes say a lot about you. Unfortunately, what that isn’t always a good thing…
As you age, the skin on your face undergoes many changes. The aging process can be especially strenuous on the eyes, causing you to lose your sense of vibrancy and youth.
However, age isn’t the only factor that contributes to premature aging around the eyes and upper face. Descending eyebrows and heavy upper eyelid tissue can weigh the eyes down and create a droopy appearance. This can be caused by multiple factors, including aging, excessive stress or lack of sleep, excessive edema (as a result of chronic sinus irritation or allergies), gravity, and stretched muscles under the skin surrounding the eyes or eyelids.
For men and women of all ages, these effects are unavoidable, but not unmanageable. Today, there are numerous options for enhancing your eyes and avoiding a tired, baggy look.
Option A: Elevate the Brows (non-surgical)
Non-surgical elevation of the outer third of brow can be extremely effective at revitalizing your eyes. Choosing a neurotoxin, such as BOTOX, is an easy and efficient way to weaken depressor muscles that cause tired eyes. It can also help soften crow’s feet lines, which is a common issue among people of all ages and skin types.
For men and women with slender faces, deflation of fat pads around the temples is also a common problem. This causes a loss of volume that can results in the dropping of the outer brow. Fillers, such as Voluma, Sculptra, and Radiesse, can be used to stabilize the brow position and help restore the lost volume.
Option B: Treat the Upper Eyelid (non-surgical)
Though non-surgical treatment won’t correct loose-hanging skin or the positioning of the upper eyelid, it can still be a great option for improving tired eyes. If the area just below the brow appears hollow, hyaluronic acid filler agents can be used to restore volume. Given that this is a sensitive area with a certain amount of risk to the eye, this option should only be performed by an experienced plastic surgeon or licensed nurse injector.
Option C: Treat the Lower Eyelid (non-surgical)
For people with enlarged fat pads under the eyelid or soft cheekbones, non-surgical treatment of the lower eyelid can make a prominent difference in appearance. Adding hyaluronic acid filler agents to blend the cheek with the lower eyelid fat pad helps to smooth the appearance of the eyelid and create a more youthful look. This technique is best suited for those interested in significantly-improved results without surgery. You can then maintain your desired results with annual repeat procedures.
Option D: Rejuvenate the Brows (surgical)
Surgical correction of the brows eliminates lateral hooding that hangs over the upper eyelids. It’s then used to place the brows in a natural position, creating a rejuvenated appearance around the eyes. Regarding this procedure, many patients wonder if they’ll appear constantly surprised post-surgery.
During your consultation, Dr. Lucas will speak with you about your desired results and determine the best technique for you. If that requires surgery, he’ll work with you to create a personalized plan using his endoscopic brow approach (which helps prevent the surprised expression by holding the hairline in its current position).
Option E: Rejuvenate the Upper & Lower Eyelids (surgical)
The goal of surgically correcting the eyelids (whether upper or lower) is to remove excess tissue and rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes. This surgery is best for people with prominent fat pads on their lower eyelids or low-hanging lids. An experienced surgeon, such as Dr. Lucas, would use this technique to create a refreshed look that can improve facial recognition and shave years off of your face (metaphorically, of course!).
