Want a Mommy Makeover? Let’s Talk Procedures, Weight, and Prep

Becoming a mom changes you forever in very rewarding ways – and for many women, it also changes their bodies forever. But it doesn’t have to! The “Mommy Makeover” is what we call a customized set of procedures designed to restore your body to what you would like after major life events like pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and even menopause.

With a Mommy Makeover, issues like extra abdominal skin, sagging breasts, and stubborn areas of extra fat can be resolved. That way, you can have your body back (sometimes even better than before!) and journey through life as a parent with more overall confidence, feeling more comfortable in your own skin.

If you want to know more about what a Mommy Makeover entails, let’s get started with answers to a few common questions about this popular procedure.

1. What is Usually Included in a Mommy Makeover?

The makeover varies for every patient, but here are the most common procedures which are put together in some combination:

But there’s not a one-size-fits-all makeover. The great thing about the Mommy Makeover is that it can be completely customized to your body, goals, and lifestyle. For more about why you might choose certain elements to include, here are five more things you need to know. When you work with a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Jay Lucas to personalize your surgical plan, you’ll get the best results.

Take note: The different parts of the mommy makeover are often booked for separate days, depending on the length of the procedures and their effects on the body.

2. What is the Ideal Weight for a Mommy Makeover?

Just as there is no one-size-fits-all makeover, there isn’t one ideal weight. The best weight for you to achieve before surgery depends on factors like your height, body type, age, and goals. However, being at a stable, healthy weight before surgery is very important for safety and results. If your weight is too low or too high for good health, undergoing surgery will not be a safe option. Plus, if your weight fluctuates frequently, you may not see the results you hope for.

The bottom line: Consult with your surgeon to determine the “ideal” weight for you, and make sure you feel relatively stable at that weight before getting your makeover.

3. How Do I Prepare My Body for a Mommy Makeover?

As with any major surgery, you want to plan ahead to have the best results and recovery in the end. Here are some tips for your physical and mental health to consider:

  • Stabilize your weight (see above).
  • Eat nutrient-dense food and drink plenty of fluids so you feel better and your body has the ingredients needed for successful healing.
  • Stay active! Even though you will have to rest and recover for a few weeks after surgery, an active lifestyle beforehand will make it easier for you to ease back into physical activity once you’re cleared by your doctor.
  • Anticipate and arrange logistics in advance, such as:
    • Pre-prepped meals, takeout, or someone to cook for you
    • Childcare
    • Time off from work
