Why Breast Implant Removals are on the Rise

When a board-certified surgeon performs your breast augmentation with high-quality implants, those implants should last a long time. Both saline and silicone implants are made with the same durable outer shell, and while manufacturers provide a warranty for failures within the first 10 years, many implants last much longer — often several decades.

However, it’s essential to understand that all synthetic materials will eventually need to be replaced, as the body has no mechanism for regenerating these materials. A few common reasons someone might opt to have their breast implants removed or replaced include:

Three Reasons for Implant Removal or Replacement

1. A Change of Mind

Sometimes a patient may decide she no longer wants implants or desires a different size to achieve a new look. Factors such as weight changes or aging can also alter the appearance of the breasts, leading to a decision to revise the implants.

2. Rippling or Capsular Contracture

While the risk is low, sometimes implants can ripple at the edges (particularly saline implants), which can show on the surface of the breast. Capsular contracture, another potential issue, occurs when scar tissue tightens around the implant, making the breast feel hard or even painful. This condition can be treated with implant replacement and modification of the scar pocket to reduce the risk of recurrence.

3. Rupture or Deflation

Both saline and silicone implants can develop defects in their outer shell over time, leading to rupture or deflation. With saline implants, a rupture typically causes rapid deflation and an obvious change in appearance. In contrast, silicone gel implants are less likely to cause noticeable changes immediately, as the gel often remains trapped within the scar tissue pocket. The FDA recommends regular imaging, such as ultrasound or MRI, to detect ruptures early and allow for timely surgical revisions before the silicone migrates outside the pocket.

Dr. Lucas almost exclusively uses silicone gel implants over saline due to their more natural look and feel, as well as significantly less rippling. Patients who have switched from saline to silicone often describe the difference as two different worlds in terms of comfort, appearance, and overall satisfaction.

Keeping You Safe

Breast implants are considered safe by the U.S. Food & Drug Association. That means that any type of implant a board-certified surgeon might use in your breast augmentation was tested for safety before making its way to the market. The FDA also continually monitors data and risks related to implant safety.

In 2021, the FDA also took several steps to strengthen safety. Their goal: helping patients like you make better-informed decisions about what you may be putting into your body via a “Patient Decision Checklist.” They also updated information from manufacturer “post-approval” studies in an effort to continuously monitor the long-term safety of implants.
