Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

If you are bothered by loose, hanging skin and extra fat on your upper arms, you are not alone. The effects of aging, weight loss, and/or heredity can make your arms droop, and no amount of diet or exercise can fix it. Sometimes referred to as “batwings,” saggy upper arms can be a source of embarrassment during warmer months when arms are bare.

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, can restore a toned and contoured look to your arms, boosting your self-confidence and opening up a whole new world of wardrobe choices.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Jay H. Lucas, M.D. has extensive experience performing arm lifts and can advise you on the best approach to reshaping your arms. Depending on the degree of sagging and fat on your arms, Dr. Lucas has various techniques at his disposal to produce optimal results.

Not surprisingly, the more excess skin and fat you have, the more extensive the procedure will be. If, for example, you have just a small amount of excess fat, but your skin is smooth and tight, liposuction [link] alone may be enough to produce the results you desire. VASER® assisted liposuction is often a good option.

If, however, your skin is loose and saggy, then Dr. Lucas may recommend arm lift surgery to tighten things up. This can be done in one of two ways, again depending on the degree of correction necessary. For a small amount of excess skin, an incision can be made under your armpit and the skin pulled up and tightened. For a larger volume of excess skin, a longer incision is made down the length of your upper arm – from the elbow to the armpit – and excess skin is removed. In either case, Dr. Lucas will contour the tissue to give your arms a toned, more youthful appearance.

When discussing arm lift surgery with Dr. Lucas, consider the tradeoff between contour and scarring. The more skin that is removed, the more extensive the scarring. Dr. Lucas will advise you during your consultation of the best option for your anatomy.

Arm lift surgery is generally very well-tolerated. You can expect to return to regular activities within a few days following your surgery. We will provide you with a vest with compression sleeves to wear for a couple weeks to keep you comfortable and ensure the best aesthetic results.
