Post-Bariatric Plastic Surgery (Body Contouring after Massive Weight Loss) in Knoxville, TN
Massive weight loss – whether through a rigorous program of diet and exercise or as a result of bariatric surgery – can leave you feeling like a prisoner in your own skin. The pride and joy you feel at having lost so much weight may be diminished by the sight of excess, saggy skin. At The Lucas Center, we believe you should be rewarded for your weight loss, not punished by it. Plastic surgery will give you back your body and make you proud of the way you look!
Transforming your body through plastic surgery following profound weight loss presents a unique set of challenges. Board-certified plastic surgeon Jay H. Lucas, M.D. has spent considerable time analyzing the needs of patients who have successfully lost large amounts of weight, and understands how to deliver superior aesthetic results. Through plastic surgery, Dr. Lucas will address the following:
- Excessive, saggy skin
- Stretched and inelastic tissue
- Thin, weak tissue
- The effects of gravity
It is best to have plastic surgery once your weight has reached a plateau and you have developed a healthy lifestyle to maintain your new weight. Typically, this is approximately 12-15 months following weight loss.
Dr. Lucas recommends a series of separate surgeries to successfully contour your body to a new slimmer shape. Working closely with you, he will help you determine which procedures are appropriate based on your anatomy and your goals. Each procedure is optional, of course, and although it is best to wait at least three months between surgeries, there is no specific timeframe or order that must be followed. You could have several procedures over the course of a year, spread them out over many years according to your needs, or pick and choose only the ones that are most important to you. The decision is yours.
Circumferential Body Lift
Nearly every massive weight loss patient will see the most dramatic results from a circumferential lower body lift; therefore Dr. Lucas usually recommends it as the first surgery. A circumferential lower body lift will reestablish the keystone area – or foundation – of your body. Only once that has been done can Dr. Lucas make aesthetic judgments regarding the rest of your body.
In a lower body lift, Dr. Lucas will remove excess skin or fatty tissue from your abdomen, thighs, and flank. If your weight loss has left your buttock area flattened and saggy, he can also reposition tissue from your flanks and shape it to create a contoured buttock area. Using your own tissue to contour your buttocks is much safer than using buttock implants.
Throughout the procedure, Dr. Lucas will sculpt and contour the midsection of your body, repositioning tissue as necessary to restore a shapelier figure.
Circumferential lower body lifts are performed by Dr. Lucas at the Parkwest Medical Center, one of Knoxville’s premier medical facilities. Following your surgery, which will last approximately 6.5 hours, you will be monitored by our nurses in the recovery room and sent home later that day. Our patients agree that spending the night in their own bed – with the one-on-one care of a family member or friend – is preferable to spending the night in a hospital!
We adhere to current recommendations for avoiding blood clots. You will be up and walking that first night and we will prescribe a five-day course of blood thinning medications. By following these precautions, our patients have avoided blood clots following body lift surgery.
A compression garment will keep you comfortable and ensure optimal results. Your discomfort will be managed by medication prescribed by Dr. Lucas. You can expect to return to normal activities within a few weeks, and resume strenuous activities or exercise in approximately six weeks.
Upper Body Lift
If you are unhappy with the appearance of excess skin on your arms, chest, and/or breast area you may also opt for an upper body lift.
In an upper body lift, Dr. Lucas will contour your arms, chest, and breast area by removing excess skin and sculpting the tissue for a leaner, more toned appearance.
Women who have lost large amounts of weight often complain about loose hanging breasts, nipples that hang very low, and an overall lack of breast volume. A breast lift – usually with implants – can restore your breasts to be fuller, perkier, and more proportionately sized for your new body. Dr. Lucas has extensive experience with breast rejuvenation procedures and understands the challenges of restoring breasts when the tissue has stretched and become inelastic.
During a consultation with Dr. Lucas, he will discuss the best surgical plan for your specific needs. He will advise you on scarring and recovery time about the massive weight loss surgery.
Inner Thigh Lift
If you have a lot of excess skin in your inner (medial) thigh area, you may opt for an inner thigh lift.
Dr. Lucas will remove excess hanging skin in your thigh area and will contour the tissue to give your legs a slimmer, more toned appearance. During a consultation with Dr. Lucas, he will discuss the best surgical plan, including scarring and recovery time.
Massive weight loss can also leave you with hanging, loose skin in your neck and lower face area. A face lift can help restore a more slender neck and jawline.
