Skin Resurfacing in Knoxville, TN
Often the best way to restore damaged skin to a more youthful, healthy appearance is to strip away the outer layer of skin and allow your body to repopulate it with a new layer.
This can be done one of three ways: through thermal agents, mechanically, or chemically.
At The Lucas Center for Plastic Surgery, we typically only recommend laser treatments (thermal agent) for treating the most severe, deep-pitted acne scars. Today’s laser technology is expensive and painful, and does not yield better results when compared with other methods of skin resurfacing.
Therefore, we prefer the less painful and less expensive alternatives of dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels.
In dermabrasion we use a device to selectively sand down your outer skin to either correct an elevated scar or to reduce wrinkles around your mouth. It is very effective and can be done right here in our plastic surgery clinic. After your skin has healed initially, any redness you may experience in the first several months can be easily hidden with makeup.
In microdermabrasion or dermaplaning, the surface of your skin is “sanded” or buffed away using slight suction and a diamond tip applicator. Your skin is left refreshed, softened, and brighter. Microdermabrasion can be used to treat fine lines and sun damage with minimal downtime.
In a chemical peel, a chemical solution is applied to your skin layer by layer. Over the next several days, your skin will flake and peel, allowing new healthy skin to grow in its place. Chemical peels are best for treating sun damage, wrinkles, pigment changes, and growths on the skin. Dr. Lucas and his staff will recommend the most appropriate type of peel for your needs.
