How to Set Realistic Expectations for a Mommy Makeover Surgery

The process of becoming a mother requires a lot from a woman — emotionally, financially, and, of course, physically. Thankfully, although there are challenges, there are rewards, too!

If you’re a mom, you likely know this paradox: motherhood can be both incredibly tough and immensely wonderful. Unfortunately, some of the physical effects of pregnancy and parenting can be difficult to reverse.

After pregnancy, labor, delivery (whether by C-section or vaginal birth), perhaps breastfeeding, and many, many nights of interrupted sleep, a woman’s body will probably never feel or look quite the same.

If you find yourself in this position, you are certainly not alone. That’s why so many moms in East Tennessee and beyond treat themselves to a Mommy Makeover: it’s all about finding confidence and loving their post-pregnancy bodies again.

For many moms, this popular plastic surgery can be transformative, but it’s important to know what it entails and have realistic expectations going in. To help with that, we’re sharing some answers to common Mommy Makeover questions so you can set realistic expectations and decide if it might be right for you…

What’s Included in a Mommy Makeover Surgery?

One of the great things about the Mommy Makeover procedure is that it’s highly customizable to your body and your desired results. There is no one-size-fits-all recommendation: Dr. Lucas works with each patient to identify the most transformative plan for her body and lifestyle.

However, here are some of the most common procedures moms in East Tennessee and beyond choose to include or ask about in their Mommy Makeover consultation:

These three often address common problem areas after pregnancy and childbirth: excess skin, drooping breasts, and stubborn fat deposits.

What is the Process for a Mommy Makeover?

Here’s where it begins to be especially important to set expectations. Although we use the term “Mommy Makeover,” which may sound like a one-and-done event, this extensive surgery usually encompasses multiple procedures that need to be spread out over time.

Dr. Lucas will work with you to determine your personalized plan and timeline; however, generally speaking, you can expect the process to look similar to this:

  1. Schedule an initial consultation with your surgeon to assess your health and make a customized surgical plan.
  2. Book your first procedure based on the surgical plan in place.
  3. Get ready at home — plan for time off work, rest, meals, childcare, and so on.
  4. Arrive at the medical center on surgery day for your first procedure.
  5. Rest, rest, and more rest. Make sure to follow all post-op instructions as directed by your surgeon and their team.
  6. Attend your follow-up appointments with your surgeon to ensure proper healing throughout your recovery.
  7. Make sure there’s an adequate amount of time in between any procedures to allow your body time to heal in increments. Your surgeon will work with you to schedule each procedure appropriately based on your personalized surgical plan and health.
  8. Follow these steps for each stage of your plan until all procedures are complete.

To help keep you safe and deliver the best results, your makeover will take time. Just remember the goal: the transformation and long-lasting confidence will be well worth the wait!

How Do I Know If I’m Ready for a Mommy Makeover?

Choosing a Mommy Makeover is a big decision that has the power to transform your body and your confidence for the better! But, as you can see, the process takes time and planning, and you’ll need a good amount of support around you so you can fully heal and enjoy the results.

Here are a few key factors to help you evaluate your personal readiness and set healthy expectations before surgery takes place:

  • Are you finished with childbearing and breastfeeding? If not, your results may change as your body continues to go through new transitions.
  • Do you have time, at home and work, to prioritize your rest and recovery after multiple procedures? (Depending on your procedures, think 1-2 weeks of very light activity, and 6-8 weeks before resuming strenuous activity.)
  • Do you have loved ones ready to help during your recovery?
  • Are you close to your “ideal” weight? (Talk with your surgeon to determine this very personal number.)
  • Is your weight relatively stable?

If the answer to any of these questions is no, this might not be the right time for your makeover. If you move forward without the margin for recovery or before you’ve found a stable, healthy weight, your long-term results may not be what you hoped.

And overall, it’s important to remember that while a Mommy Makeover can offer a HUGE confidence boost, it’s not a quick fix or a substitute for healthy habits. You’ll still need to take care of yourself, Mama — and you deserve it!
