The Biggest Misconceptions About Plastic Surgery in 2023, Debunked

Unfortunately, some people have misconceptions or believe myths about plastic surgery. Sometimes these myths can be harmless, while sadly, other times they can cause confusion or hesitancy about plastic surgery.

Looking back on 2023, Dr. Lucas observed a few misconceptions in particular, either in the media, through industry connections, or in his own community.

Our goal at The Lucas Center is to help create real, lasting confidence for our clients — and that starts by providing helpful, accurate information so you can make the best decision for you.

So, let’s break down three misconceptions about plastic surgery that Dr. Lucas noticed in 2023.

Misconception #1: Liposuction is for everyone.

Dr. Lucas Debunks This:

  • Actually, few people are candidates for liposuction of the inner thighs or the upper arms.
  • Only people with no excess skin and elastic skin can benefit from liposuction alone
  • Many women who have had children or people who have undergone major weight loss need some skin removed. This can be done with abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) in addition to liposuction to achieve their desired goals with cosmetic surgery.

Misconception #2: Buttock lifts and large breast implants are still in high demand.

Dr. Lucas Debunks This:

  • Buttock lifts are definitely fading in popularity, as are large breast implants.
  • Women tend to prefer more natural-looking results now.
  • While breast augmentation (with or without implants) and breast lifts are still quite popular, patients today are more often opting for smaller, uplifting results proportional to the rest of their bodies.

Misconception #3: For fuller lips, you should get BOTOX® + a Lip Flip.

Dr. Lucas Debunks This:

  • Even though “lip flips” (using a neurotoxin like BOTOX® to relax and “flip” the upper lip) are a popular idea, they aren’t necessarily the best way to achieve fuller lips.
  • In general, fillers are a better option for most patients because they cause less lip distortion.
  • Fillers also do not need to be repeated as often as “lip flips.”
